Me and My Teddy Bear

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Holidays come
and Holidays go
But still this doggy
doesn't know
Why them people
make such a fuss
over paper,  packages,
 bows and stuff
Toys that make noise
and scare me away
The cookies are good
I could have those everyday
But all I need
each day of the year
Is my little
Purple Teddy Bear
I love to have near
I growl at the cats
when they try to get
a good sniff
and skooch away
as fast as I can
so my friend Bandit
won't try to play with it
I take it to bed
I always have it with me
It is better then
glittery boxes and bows
that they stick under
a dumb tree
I hold on to it tight
even through the
party News Years Eve
and I run with it to my bed
when the fireworks
scare me
My teddy keeps me warm
when the temp drops to fifty below
I love my dear bear
more then anyone will know
It has been with me through the year
and hopefully another one too
Unless Mommy gets
something else I can love too.

Taming The Wolf

To most people, the fearsome wolf of some fact and much fable seems too far removed from today's domestic dog to suggest anything more than a distant kinship. After all, the vast majority of dogs are gentle and usually crave human companionship. Wolves, on the other hand, are notoriously shy and can be extraordinarily vicious when cornered or confronted. And yet the fact remains: The progenitor of man's best and oldest friend is none other than the legendary creature who still symbolizes all that is wild and unharnessed in the world. And as any dog owner will confirm the wolf within remains amazingly near the surface.

A Dog's Life...

Here's a good story to share with you..

----------------

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron,  his  wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family there were no miracles left for Belker, and  offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for the four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped  peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion.

We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than  human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why." Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, "People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?" The four-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply.  Speak kindly.  Leave the rest to God.

Now, I know Doggy's can't have chocolate, buttttttt, Mommy went shopping today, and bought me chocolate for Doggy's ... Oh mannnn they are good, she wouldn't let me eat them all, but I would if I could. She hid them on the top of the fridge.. The company that made the doggy chocolates have a website, so check it out. They are called www.CHOCOLICKTREATS.com  Mommy has been busy cleaning up all the cat hair, from when we were gone... Whatta mess those cat's are..  I sleep in the cat's bed, cause he is too fat to fit, so it is my bed now, neener neener! Well Mommy is making pizza and I don't want to miss out on any left over's or the crust the kids wont eat, maybe I well get some chocolicks afterwards for dessert.. mmm mmmm mmm yummy, it's a wonderful life being a dog..

Man! whatta month it has been!

Hello Everyone! Man July sure has flown by for me! I have been busy, napping in cool dark spots in the house to avoid the heat. I also have been riding back and forth in my Mom's car alot. Her Mom and Dad, left on one of those big tin can's that make too much noise, and fly way up in the air like a bird. So my Mom has had to take me and my friend Bandit, to her parents house, for a week and a half and stay there. My doggy Daddy Elvis lives there, and my brother Chunk too,  and their friend Sugar Bear, who looks like she is a Golden Retriever with Dachshund legs.. weirddd... I was born in that house, I can't remember but that's what Mom says.
My dad and my brother, are just a little too wound up for me. They can't sleep all night, and whine to get out of their kennels in the middle of the  night, which just made my Mom mad and interruppted our beauty sleep, BIG TIME! Plus can you believe this?!? there was no cat food! I refuse to eat anything but cat food( canned food and people food too, of course! ), and these weirdo's only had dog kibble, YUCK! I think I even lost some weight. When Mom starting putting her stuff in the car yesterday,  I knew it was time to go. I was so excited, I went down the stairs by myself and waited at the car, till she picked me up. I can go up and down the stairs when I want, but why do it myself, when all I have to do is cry a little and wag my tail and Mom picks me up and carries me anywhere I want to go! I have her wrapped around my finger, uh I mean paw, forget I am a dog sometimes, hee hee. Any how,  I have only been home one day, but I am so happy to have my blanky, my little stuffed teddy bear, and all the cat food I can eat again. Also this month, my Daddy has left too, on one those flying can's , to some place called Prudhoe Bay. I am not sure where it is, but I do know I have heard my Mommy complain about how much things cost there, and that the ATM's charge you $3 to take out money! With Dad being gone, and Mom stuck with 2 home's, 2 kid's , 1 cat, 2 fish tanks, and 5 doggy's too take care of this month, she has been pretty cranky.. I just avoid her unless I need outside, and wait till the kids are in bed to get on her lap for some hugs and kisses. She always seems more calm, after the kids are in bed, and its the best time to get some love. I guess Daddy took her camera too, so she hasnt been able to take some new pictures for my website yet. She has another camera, but hasnt figured out how to work it. If I had front paws, I would do it myself. I could take my pic in a mirror or something, like all the teeny boppers on MySpace..LOL

A short story about Me...

My person, that I own ( of course I give her the pleasure of thinking she own's me) , is tickled pink with herself. She wrote a short story about moi' and it might be getting published in a book, being put together by the Pets with Disabilities website. I told her if she haaadddd too, she could put it on my webspace.. She has her own site, but has to put her two cent's on mine too.. Human's *sigh* So anyway's, if I still want my daily dog bone's, I suppose I better share.. So here it is, enjoy....

My dog Skooch is the best dog ever. She is 11 years old and was born without her two front legs. But I tell you what, that never stopped her. When she was born my dog Tigger, Skooch's mother, never treated her differently and loved her just as much as the other puppy. Skooch was very active though, and would roll away from her mom, and didn't know how to make her way back, so we spent allot of nights, placing her back at her mothers side.
I was 18 when Skooch was born, and was on my way to Ohio from North Pole, Alaska, with my boyfriend, now husband. I knew my parents, would never be able to find someone, that would be willing to buy a pure bred dachshund without front legs, and plus I just couldn't leave her. I feel a special connection with Skooch, I too was born with birth defects, of my shoulder and spine, and had fallen in love with her instantly. Her determination, and spirit could win anyone over. So Skooch at 4 weeks of age, went on a 7 day road trip to Ohio. I had purchased bottles and formula, for Skooch, plus also at the same time, I was raising a 10 day old cocker spaniel whose mother would not care for, who needed bottles. Skooch excepted bottles for awhile, but was more interested in the canned food. The puppies had a bed at my feet , under the heater vent to keep warm. In front of the bed was paper for Skooch to potty on, she figured that out real fast, I was amazed at how smart she was, she basically potty trained herself. I have never had trouble with her going in the house, at all. Late in the evening, we were traveling through the mountains of Alaska, on our way to Canada. We were playing around and howling, and Skooch jumped right in with her tiny little puppy voice and howled away, it was the cutest thing I had ever saw, and will remember it always. We had stopped in a grassy area in Canada to eat some lunch and stretch our legs. At this point, Skooch still hadn't figured out how to move around, she could get around a small area, like her bed, but was unable to move any distance. We figured at some point we would have to have her fitted for a wheel chair. As we sat to have lunch, I placed Skooch about 5 feet away out of curiosity, to see what she would do, or if she was capable of getting herself to me. Skooch has two small chicken wing type appendages where her legs should be, she sat in the grass wiggling her little chicken wings, trying to get to me as hard as she could. Finally out of pure will, she began to hop on her chest, and use her chicken wings to pull her along, and made her way to me. It was then we decided to name her Skooch, since she skooched her way to me, and skooched along to freedom. Since then nothing has stopped her.  She chases squirrels, and other dogs. She hops her way all over the yard to where ever she wants to go. When she was younger she could even hop on to the furniture to curl up on my lap. As she has aged , she has slowed down a bit. She hops to where she wants to go, then whines to be picked up and carried. She sits on her hind legs, wiggling her little chicken wings to be picked up and put on the couch , instead of jumping.  We tried to put her in a doggy wheelchair (a homemade version, handy man's special) , but she didn't like it one bit, it was like putting booties on a dog, and then they act as if they are unable to walk. Skooch felt as if the chair was holding her back, so she has been roaming free, just like she likes too. We have been back in Alaska, since she was 6 years old, and have had a special jacket made for her to cover her chest in the winter. She would rather not wear it, but it can get awful cold here. On warm days she gets to hop through the snow with out her coat.
She truly is amazing, and greatly loved by everyone in my family. She is one of a kind, and will be deeply missed when she passes on.  But for now, she is still brightening the lives of the young and the old , when she is introduced to people. And still inspiring me, and teaching me a lesson in love, one of many in this life. I love her no matter what, legs or no legs, she is one special dog.
